Good morning Year 4! We hope you are enjoying the project so far!

English
Over the next few weeks, we will be creating a non – fiction book about the Romans for the Sussex Archeological Society so that we can teach others all about the Romans. In English, we will be looking at Non – fiction books that have already been written to help us.
This booklet is to be completed over the next two days. We would like you to answer these questions about a non fiction book you have at home or on Bug Club.

We are continuing learning to use Roman Numerals today.

Project

Now we know that Romulus was the first king of Rome, which is believed to have been founded in 753 BCE. Rome was ruled by kings until 509 BCE. Lands that are ruled by kings (or queens) are known as kingdoms. The seven kings who ruled Rome were: Romulus (we know about him), Numa Pompilius, Tullus Hostilius, Ancus Marcius, Tarquinius Priscus, Servius Tullius and Tarquinius Superbus. In 509 BCE, Rome became a republic, which means it was no longer ruled by a king, but by a leader elected by the people. More about that tomorrow!
Today’s task is to find out a bit more about the seven kings of Rome. Copy (or print, if preferred) the table below and then research and try to add at least one fact about each.

I am sure many of you cracked the code in maths yesterday. This was one of the quotes that was revealed. These words were spoken by a famous Roman who we will be finding out all about later this week!
Project
So, how did it all begin? In the past, before people knew how to read and write, legends (stories about the past that may have some truth in them but probably changed over time, like Chinese whispers) were often told as a way of explaining important things that happened. This is the legend of Romulus and Remus, which was told by the Ancient Romans to explain how Rome was founded.
This is a fun version – with Lego!
Please watch this PowerPoint of the story.T2-H-4185-Romulus-and-Remus-Story-Powerpoint_ver_1 (1)(1)
Now, please divide a page of your book into six or eight boxes (you choose) and draw and write the key events of the story, one in each box, using the PowerPoint to help you.
Maths
Well done for all your hard work yesterday! Here is another reminder of how to read Roman Numerals.

Today, we are going to look at answering some reasoning questions on Roman Numerals.
English
We have decided that we can help the Sussex Heritage Society. They have asked us to create a non – fiction text to help other children learn all about the Romans. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning all about the Romans and creating our own non – fiction book all about them.
To help us do this, first we need to learn all about Non – Fiction texts.
Today, we will be looking at the difference between fiction and non – fiction books.
Have a look at this website to remind you the difference between them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z2yycdm/articles/zty8xfr
Please complete this activity: us-l-191-fiction-or-nonfiction-activity-sheet_ver_2
Today’s fun task.
We would like you to think about the books you have read since you have been at home. The teachers have created a poster of all the fiction and non – fiction texts they have read recently. We would like you to create your own.
Divide your page into two sections: fiction and non fiction and print or draw your own pictures of the books you have read since you have been at home. This can include books from Bug Club. Please sort these into fiction and non-fiction.

Monday 8th June 2020

Hello Year 4! We hope you had a wonderful weekend! This week we would like Friday’s project work to be emailed to your class teacher.
Yew Tree please email to Mrs Thwaites n.thwaites@parkgate.hants.sch.uk
Hazel Tree please email your work to Miss Quinn b.quinn@parkgate.hants.sch.uk
We have some very exciting news for you today. We were handed a very mysterious letter by Mrs Welch this week. When we opened it, we became very excited and we are sure you will be too.
Here is a copy of the letter we received: The Sussex Archaeological Society
What do we think Year 4, can we help them?
Of course we can!
Our task over the next 5 weeks is going to involve researching all about the Romans so we can share our knowledge with the rest of the children in Park Gate and people in our local area.
The first thing we need to look at is who were the Romans and when did they exist.

Have a look at this timeline, which runs from 753 BCE to 409 CE. These 1162 years cover the period of time that you are going to be learning about – from when Rome was established until the time that the Romans left Britain. You will see the letters BCE and CE on the dates on the timeline and you will be seeing and hearing these a lot more throughout the project. If you talk to adults in your family, they might refer to BC and AD when talking about dates so please watch this clip, which explains all these terms.
Do you remember learning about The Great Fire of London in Y2 and The Stone Age in Y3? This PowerPoint will help you to see where the Romans fit in to the timeline of Britain’s history:
t2-h-5584-british-history-timeline-powerpoint- (1)
Did you notice that the Romans arrived in Britain in AD43, after the Iron Age, which, as you know from Y3, followed the Stone Age and the Bronze Age?
The Romans get their name because they travelled to Britain from Rome, the capital of Italy.
Today’s task is to look at the map of Europe. If you can print this, that would be great. If not, please look carefully at the map and answer as much as you can in your book. Please use the internet to research and find the answers to the questions.
Maths
This week, we will be looking at Roman Numerals.
Roman numerals are the numbers that were used in ancient Rome, which employed combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet (I, V, X, L, C, D and M).
Lots of you will remember this video from Year 3 and 4. Enjoy!

In Roman Numerals, numbers over ten are made up of the number of tens e.g. X, X, XX add the symbols for the ones (I,II,III, IV, V, VI).
so 18 would be XVIII in Roman Numerals (10 + 8).
The Roman Numerals for ones (1-9) and tens (10-90) are shown above to help you.
I would like a lot of you to try the green challenge today. It is a fun activity and uses the knowledge you need for Amber so you most of you will feel very confident with this!
French
Bonjour, Year 4!
I hope you got on well with the French last week and joined in with the song!
This week, you will be playing some games about the weather so it should not take you very long. We will use an online home learning resource by Language Angels. This will allow you to hear the French words and phrases spoken, which will help your accents to be fantastic! You can use a tablet or computer to do this. You need to click on the following link:
ttps://www.languageangels.com/schools/
select login at the top right of the screen
select login Home School
select the box that says FREE
Type in the username in the top box : ParkGa1499
Type in the password in the second box: lahome
Click on login
Select Dashboard on the top left of the screen
There are then 3 levels of learning to select from.
To access the games, you can select any of the Units under any of the levels.
You then need to click on START LESSON then Go to games arcade (under Play Games.)
Select your answers on the next 2 screens which will bring you to the list of games. Look under Medium Challenge and find Quel Temps Fait-Il? near the bottom. Click to select.
Try Weather Picture Bingo and Picture Memory. Make sure you say the phrases aloud in the picture memory game!
Weather Forecast Activity
Have a look at the map of France attached and the table below which tells you the weather in the towns in France. Read the weather phrases in the table and work out if they are true or false by looking at the map. Just write numbers 1-10 and write or draw true/false next to each one. Next week I will post the answers!

Bravo, Year 4. Have a great week!

Friday 5th June 2020

Good morning Year 4! Well done for nearly completing your first week of the new half term! We have some very fun activities for you today!
There will also be a Friday assembly recorded by Mrs McCarthy on Facebook today! We think it is definitely worth a watch!
Project
It’s time to put your digestion knowledge to the test!
How far can you get on this ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?’ digestion quiz?
Who Wants to be a Millionaire – Digestive System quiz
You will need to put this in slideshow mode to play along.
For your task today, we would like you to create your own quiz about the digestive system. Could you base this on a well known quiz show? Maybe you could play this with some of the members of your family (if they are not too busy, of course). You might even want to create your very own quiz show.
We would love to see what you come up with. If it is okay with your adults at home, please share these with us on Facebook.
Maths
You should have a good understanding of word problems by now so today you will have a mixture of division and multiplication problems to look at. You have to work out which problems are multiplication and which are division and then you will solve the multiplication problems ONLY!
To help you work out which ones to answer (only the multiplication questions) remember to use the Draw it or model it like we do in class. You could use counters or items you have in the house to help you picture the problems.
You can use a mental method to solve the problems or a written method. The choice is yours!

Today we are going to look at using a written method to help us solve multiplication problems. We are going to have a look at the expanded column method!
Expanded column method for multiplication is just like the expanded method for addition, you just have to multiply instead of add! Have a look at my example:
So, we start by multiplying the ones column.
Then we multiply the tens column.
Finally, we add the two answers together to get the answer to the original calculation!
Click on the link below and chose whether to solve red, amber or green problems today using the expanded column method.
Project
Today, we are going to be looking at the functions of each of the parts of the digestive system.
Using these sources of information find out and record all the functions of the parts of the digestive system.
https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/human-body/digestion/in-mouth/
Again, you have several options to choose from today.
- You might want to write this in paragraphs with subheadings e.g.
The mouth
As soon as you take a bite out of your food, the digestion process begins. It all starts in your mouth where your teeth break down your food into smaller parts by chewing. Saliva is released by the salivary glands which contains enzymes that are able to help break down your food. This allows for your food to be swallowed down your throat and into your oesophagus.
- You might want to create a labelled diagram
- You might want to create a PowerPoint (this must include paragraphs explaining the functions).

Hello Operation Ouchers!
Please watch this video to reveal what we will be learning about this week!
Today, we are going to be labelling the parts of our digestive systems.
You can chose how you would like to do this from the following options:
- Draw around your body on a large piece of paper and draw the organs and parts of the digestive system
- Draw the digestive system in your book using your sketching skills
Use this diagram to help you:
Use this video to help you label all the parts of the digestive system:

Please email today’s work to Mrs Thwaites n.thwaites@parkgate.hants.sch.uk Thank you.
Please listen to chapter 33. Listen carefully for the part where the cave is described.
Chapter 33: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d19VUmx555Y
We have now met Miss Root/The Tooth Witch in two settings and today’s task is to compare those settings. The settings are The Dental Surgery in chapter 17 (this chapter was posted on Monday 18th May, if you would like to listen to it again) and The Witch’s Cave in chapter 33, which you have just listened to.
Now, please compare and contrast the two settings. Think about things that are the same or nearly the same (similarities) and things that are different (contrasts). The contrasts might link, e.g. the throne and the dental chair are both seats but they have very different purposes. Copy and complete the table below in your book:
Optional Challenge:
Now that you have compared the two settings in detail, write a paragraph to let me know which description you think is the most effective. This means, which had the biggest effect on you, as the reader – made you scared, made you want to read on, helped you to feel how Alfie might have felt there? Good morning Year 4! We all hope you had a wonderful half term in the sunshine.
Learning at home this half term is slightly different. Monday’s will be a French activity from Mrs Cowley instead of project learning. The teachers are now back in school so we would like to see one piece of your work each week from now on.
This week, Mrs Thwaites is continuing to set you exciting reading activities as we finish the Demon Dentist. Mrs Kirkpatrick will be introducing us to multiplication methods and the ‘Operation Ouch!’ project will be brought to you by Miss Quinn.

French
Bonjour Year 4! Ça va?
I hope you have remembered lots of the French you have learned with Mrs Thwaites, even though it has been a long time since you have practised together. Now is a great time to revise and learn some new vocabulary!
The last topic you were doing was le temps (the weather) so this week I would like you to do a little bit of a re-cap on this.
First, please click on the link to listen to a short French song about the weather. Listen a few times and join in if you can. Can you work out what it is saying about the ducks and the penguins?
Here are the types of weather you may remember from last term.
Il pleut = it is raining
Il neige = it is snowing
Il y a du soleil = it is sunny
Il y a du vent = it is windy
Il y a un orage = there is a storm
Il fait beau = the weather is fine
Il fait mauvais = the weather is not good
Il fait froid = it is cold
Il fait chaud = it is hot
Practise asking quel temps fait-il? (What is the weather like?) Can you add aujourd’hui? (today)
If someone in your home will practise with you, try to take turns asking and answering, quel temps fait-il?
Have a go at the attached sheet. You need to read and draw the correct weather in each box. Instead of printing it, you can write each sentence and draw a picture to match underneath. Remember to read aloud!

So, we have been looking at food chains and food webs this week. We, as humans, are omnivores (we eat both plants – vegetables, fruit etc – and meat). However, we need to make sure we eat the right types of food in order to survive and be healthy.
Quick note. There are some humans who chose to be herbivores (they don’t want to eat meat) and that’s ok! They can still enjoy a healthy diet as you can get protein from foods other than meat.
Watch the following video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMHVEFWNLMc
We need all these things in our diet:
Carbohydrates (pasta, bread)
Proteins (meat, nuts, seeds, quorn)
Fats (oils, butter)
Fibre (fruit and vegetables)
Water
Within all these food groups there are also vitamins and minerals which we also need!
Complete the food pyramid putting the food into the correct section on the pyramid. What do you notice? What do we need more of? What do we need less of?
Optional:
Create your own plate of food, making sure it has all the healthy foods you need on it. Ask your grown-ups if you can make this plate of food in real life and perhaps eat it for dinner. Ask your adults if they would like to take a picture and post it onto our Facebook page for you!

Project
If you chose to complete the optional task yesterday then here are the answers:
A carnivore is a creature that eats meat, such as a lion or a dog.
An herbivore is a creature that eats plants only, such as caterpillars or cows.
An omnivore is a creature that eats both meat and vegetables, such as US! We are omnivores!
Well done if you got those correct!!
Today we are going to take a look at food webs. A food web is a tool that illustrates the feeding relationship among species within a specific habitat.
Here is an example of a woodland food web.
Watch the video below:
Create your own food web. You can choose one of the following habitats:
Woodland
Sea
Optional: Answer the following questions as fully as you can. Looking at the example of a woodland food web above, what would happen if we removed the rabbit from the web? What would happen if we removed the trees from the web? What would happen if we added another creature to the web from a different habitat, such as a lion? What would happen if the grass had a poisonous chemical on it to get rid of little insects?

Well done for working so hard to understand equivalent fractions yesterday. I would like you to apply these skills today by answering some reasoning questions. I have also uploaded the power-point to go through some examples if you feel you need it. There is no separate green task today. However, we also know that you have great imaginations! Once again, we’d like you to write in the style of the author, David Walliams. Can you come up with three more entertaining ways that Alfie and Raj could try to remove Raj’s tooth? They can be as far-fetched and crazy as you like! So, yesterday we looked at food chains and we know that plants are producers. They can produce their own food and energy to survive. A consumer is an animal that eats the producer in order to survive (this is because the consumer cannot make its own food and energy).
Using the producers and consumers below create your own food chain!
Food chains do not have to be laid out in a straight line; they can be drawn in a circle. See two examples below for ideas.
Make sure you label your food chain!
Optional challenge: find the definitions and write them down for the following words:
Carnivore
Omnivore
Herbivore
Maths
Well done for completing yesterday’s task. Today, we will be looking at equivalent fractions.
These are fractions that are equal in value or size but they have been divided into different amounts.
This maths lesson is slightly different today. Please read through the document named Amber and green lesson carefully and answer the questions as you go and write them down in your book before you do amber or green task. This will help you to understand today’s and tomorrow’s tasks.

As you listen to chapter 16, we would like you to think about how Alfie might be feeling throughout the chapter. This will require you to use your inference skills (being like a detective, working out how Alfie is feeling from the clues that the text gives you). At the start, he is already being chased by a lot of people! Here is Tony Ross’ illustration from chapter 15 of the members of the chase so far:
As you listen to chapter 16, stop the video and make notes of the main events and how you think Alfie might feel as each of these happens. Try to choose adventurous and varied vocabulary to describe the boy’s feelings. Remember, some events don’t refer to Alfie, so you don’t need to note those, unless they have an effect on him.
E.g. At the start, Alfie is running – he’s scared but determined to keep going.
Challenge: Once you’ve listened to the whole chapter, you could use your notes to help you to draw an emotions graph, like we’ve done at school, on one page of your book. (It would be a good idea to turn the book sideways to do this) and graph the events and Alfie’s feelings throughout the chapter.
Here is an example about a different story, to remind you of what your graph might look like.

I hope you all had a successful time adding and subtracting fractions yesterday. Today, we are going to deepen our learning by looking at adding 2 or more fractions.
There are 2 key pieces of information we need to remember for today’s task.
Fractions are equal to a whole when the numerator (the top number) is the same as the denominator (the bottom number). For example:
Here are today’s task. There is no green task today as this is something new we are looking at in Year 4. I have also included a PPT to guide you if you become stuck.

Today, we are going to be exploring adding and subtracting fractions. There is no video today because I know you are all very confident with this and you are going to do a great job.
When we are looking at adding and subtracting fractions, it is really important to remember that the denominator does not change.

As you all know Year 4, I love pizza. I love pizza so much I have decided to share this pizza with my friend (within the same household, of course).
This whole pizza is divided into 8 slices. Therefore I know that the denominator of my fraction is 8. So one slice would be:
Last night, I ate 3 slices and my friend ate 4 slices. Therefore I ate 3 out of the 8 pieces and my friend ate 4 out of the 8 slices of the whole pizza.
I would like to know how many slices we ate altogether. To solve this, I need to add the fraction of the pizza I ate to the fraction of the pizza my friend ate.
Use this to help you complete these tasks today.
Red task and challenge
Red – Today, we are going to be exploring quarters. Have a look at the fun video to remind you all about quarters.
https://www.twinkl.co.uk/go/resource/t-n-2545030-fractions-quarters-video
Your challenge today is to create your own pictures and models showing one quarter.
Use ideas from the video and use objects around the house to show a quarter. How creative can you get?
Take pictures of your favourite ones or draw them in your book.

Please listen to chapters 9 and 10.
Chapter 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs71i3tlRnE
Chapter 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAjb4RzJO3Y
Today’s activity is “Role on the wall”, where we think in depth about a character. Think back over everything that you have learnt about Alfie so far in the story.
This is Alfie.
- In the middle of a page of your book, draw a very quick sketch of Alfie, copying the picture above. You are, of course, welcome to print it out and stick it in, if preferred.
- Now, have a good look at him and write some words or phrases around your sketch to describe his appearance (what he looks like). If you have a coloured pencil, you could choose one colour to bubble these ideas. Try to make exciting vocabulary choices.
- Next, add any facts that we know about him so far. You could bubble these in another colour.
- Finally, add your ideas about what his character is like. You could bubble these in another colour. Again – please choose adventurous vocabulary.

Monday 11th May 2020
Hello Year 4! We hope you had a wonderful bank holiday weekend and enjoyed celebrating VE day! This is how some of the adults in Year 4 celebrated on Friday.
Miss Quinn commemorated those who lost their lives by taking part in the 2 minute silence on the beach (near her house).
Mrs Thwaites baked some delicious looking scones and had an afternoon tea in her garden.
Mrs Kirkpatrick celebrated by going for a sunny walk for her daily exercise with her family.
Mrs Humphries taught her children the ‘Lindy Hop’, a popular dance in WW2.
Mrs Fast and Mrs Rowley decorated the school gates on Thursday to cheer up the neighbours on VE day!
Mrs Brown dressed up as a Land Girl and enjoyed a socially distanced street party with her neighbours.
Mrs Tigwell spent the day in the garden with her boys and will be setting you a special challenge tomorrow.
This week, the project work will be brought to you by Mrs Kirkpatrick. Maths will be presented by Miss Quinn and Mrs Thwaites will continue guiding you through the reading and spelling. Please note that our key bits of work will needed to be emailed to your own class teacher. Please email your reading work on Wednesday and your project work on Friday! Yew Tree class please email your reading to Mrs Thwaites and your project work to Mrs Kirkpatrick. Hazel class please email both pieces of work to Miss Quinn. We really enjoyed seeing your teeth presentations last week and we were very impressed with your scientific knowledge. We can also tell that you worked very hard on your maths task and the presentation of your calculations was beautiful. There will be no maths task to email this week as we are going to build up to a task on fractions next Monday.
Project
Good morning Year 4! This week we are looking at the human skeleton and its importance in our body!
Let’s start with something fun and hands on!! Have a go at making your own skeleton. You will need to print out the following document and some scissors and glue! (If you don’t have a printer then you could draw around your body and draw your own life size skeleton).

This week we will be starting to look at fractions! Don’t worry, I know fractions can be scary but I will be uploading a video every day to help you through and there will be lots of fun activities to help us learn. We are going to need very good times tables knowledge to help us with fractions so today I would like you to practise on Times Tables Rockstars for at least 30 minutes. Why not put some music on just like we do in class? Here are the results of last week’s boys vs girls tournament. Boys I think you may have to work a little harder this week!

Have a look back at all the information you have learnt over the past few days. Today’s challenge is to present your knowledge in some way. Mrs McCarthy would like you to share your knowledge about how many teeth we have, what different types there are, what the structure (inside) of a tooth is like and how to look after our teeth.
You can present this is anyway you like but remember I am going to ask you to send it through to me (Miss Quinn) so I can see what a great job you have done!
You could present this information in a PPT, a leaflet, a poster or even a video. Please email these to b.quinn@parkgate.hants.sch.uk when you have finished! Good luck Year 4 and be as creative as you would like!

Today is your last day so make sure you let your body rest over the long weekend J
Reading
Please read Chapter 2
Weren’t Alfie and Dad’s daydreams great?
Today’s activity is to draw your daydream.
Draw a thought bubble in your book, like this one, using about half a page:
Draw where you would go and what you would do in your daydream and then write some great descriptive phrases around your bubble about what you’ve drawn. If you like, colour your picture using the coloured pencils that the Friends of Park Gate kindly gave you.
Maths
You have been working so hard at solving addition and subtraction problems! So today I’ve set you a maths investigation!!
Red
Pick two two-digit numbers.
Find the sum (total) of the numbers.
Find the difference between the numbers (subtraction).
Can you find other numbers with the same sum and difference?
Amber
Here’s a maths trick to try:
- Think of one of the numbers from 1 to 9.
- Add 9 to your number.
- Add the digits of your answer together. What is your new number?
What do you notice?
Try the trick again with a new starting number. What do you notice now?
Jonas tried the trick with a few different numbers. He said:
“I think you will always get back to your original number, because adding 9 is the same as adding 10 and subtracting 1.”
Do you agree with Jonas? Can you help him explain what’s happening?
Can you explain the trick in a different way?
Green
Pick two two-digit numbers.
Find the sum of the numbers.
Find the difference between the numbers.
Then find the sum and difference of the sum (add) and difference (subtraction) .
What do you notice about the numbers?
Does this always happen?
Try for other starting numbers.
For example:
My numbers are 24 and 31.
The sum of them is 55 and the difference between them is 7.
Now my numbers are 55 and 7.
The sum of them is 62 and the difference between them is 48.

Wednesday 6th May 2020
Good morning Year 4! The sunshine is back! Hurrah!
Important message to parents from Miss Quinn: Hello parents, it has been so lovely to hear from you and I hope you are all keeping well! We are trying to ensure that activities are as independent as possible and please be reassured that we completely understand what a challenge things are at the moment. We think you are all doing an amazing job and we have been so impressed with all the work we have seen! I also have a confession to make, I previously commented that we would like Friday’s project work to be emailed but I completely forgot that of course it is VE day bank holiday on Friday, so we will not be setting tasks. We would instead really like it if you could email Thursday’s project work to me (Miss Quinn). Please do not worry if you send this over the weekend or on Monday to fit your learning at home schedule. I would also like to take this opportunity just to send my best wishes to all of you and thank you for your ongoing support. We’re all in this together! Many thanks and kindest regards, Miss Quinn.

Monday 4th May 2020
Happy Monday Year 4! Our new project is finally here! We are very excited!
Your adults at home received a letter this week letting them know about how our home learning is slightly changing this week. From this week onward, we will be asking your adults to send us two pieces of your work which we will be able to look at and give you some feedback, just like we would in school. Miss Quinn and Mrs Kirkpatrick are in school this week so we will be asking you to send your work to specific teachers that might not be your class teacher. We are going to ask you to send your maths work you complete on Monday to Mrs Thwaites. We would also like you to send Friday’s project work to Miss Quinn. We will aim to have this sent back to you with our comments on within a few days of your work being sent in.
This week your different tasks will be set by different teachers. Miss Quinn will be taking the lead on your project learning! Mrs Kirkpatrick will be writing to you about your Handwriting and maths! Mrs Thwaites is going to be telling you about some exciting reading!
Our new project!
Please watch this video to introduce our new project for the next few weeks:
How very exciting!
Your task today is to make a poster, leaflet or video all about how and why you should look after your teeth!
Watch this experiment that shows why it is important to brush your teeth!
Watch this video about how to brush your teeth:
Reading
We are also going to be reading a new book as part of your project.
This picture is the first page of our exciting new Guided Reading text! If you recognise it, please don’t tell anyone else, as we’re not ready to reveal the book title just yet! Don’t worry, you won’t need a copy of the book, as some familiar faces will be reading it to you soon on our blog!
Handwriting
Good morning Year 4! This week you won’t be doing handwriting but instead there are some core strength activities for you to do.
You will be working on the floor today so make sure you have something you can lie on that is soft e.g. gym mat or a couple of blankets. Remember when completing these exercises if it starts to hurt STOP! You do not want to cause yourself an injury.
Warm up: load up the following video and complete the warm up exercises shown.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRQf3yFXO1Y
Great job everyone!!! Have a go at these core strength exercises.
- Bridging
Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Push your bottom up off of the floor but make sure your head and shoulders are on the ground. Now hold this pose for 1 minute.
- Superman
You can do this on the floor or on your bed. Lie on your stomach and lift your arms up off the floor so that your upper chest comes up off the floor as well. If you find this easy, try lifting your legs up off the floor as well. Hold this pose for 1 minute.
- Crab Walking
Sit on your bottom and place your hands on the floor behind you. Place your feet flat on the floor so that your legs are bent. Now gently push up into crab position. Can you hold this position for 1 minute? Have a go at moving around the room, carefully, in this position.
- The Plank
Lie on your front and lean on your forearm. Ensure your arm is at a 90 degree angle. Gently push yourself up ensuring your back is straight and your legs are straight. It’s best to do this position near a mirror so you can check that your body is positioned correctly. Otherwise you could hurt yourself, so be careful! Once you are in the correct position then try holding this pose for 30 seconds.
Maths
Choose your problems to solve. Remember to show your working out!

Science
As it’s Friday we have an exciting experiment for you today!

What you’ll need:
- A glass of water (about three quarters full)
- White paper
- A sunny day
Instructions:
- Take the glass of water and paper to a part of the room with sunlight (near a window is good).
- Hold the glass of water (being careful not to spill it) above the paper and watch as sunlight passes through the glass of water, refracts (bends) and forms a rainbow of colors on your sheet of paper.
- Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles to see if it has a different effect.
If your parents are happy to, take a picture of your experiment and post it on our Facebook page!
Maths
It’s Friday so let’s play TTRS. Why not put some music on whilst you play!
This is Miss Quinn’s favourite:
Here is a link to our Rock Stars playlist:
We would like everyone to join in and it’s high stakes today! Its boys vs girls (ooooooooh big deal!)
Play, play, play as much as you can. How many correct answers can you get to help the boys and girls in your class?
Have a great day Year 4! We can’t wait to introduce our new project to you next week! We are all very excited! Have a great weekend and remember:

Science
As we learnt in our previous science lesson: light travels in straight lines! This is how shadows are created. But when light travels through different mediums such as water the light bends (is refracted).
Try this experiment.
- Get a clear glass
- Half fill it with water
- Then get a straw (or a pencil)
- Place the straw into the water. Look what has happened to the straw once it has entered the water!
In your books draw your experiment and label the diagram.
Watch this video to learn a little more about refraction:

Warm up: let’s get our bodies warmed up first. Gentle jog on the spot for 30 seconds. Next, gentle make big circles with your arms (like a windmill). Great job! Now to see if you can remember those animal positions. Position yourself into meerkat posse and hold this for 1minute 30 seconds. Can you think of a funny joke whilst in this pose?
Activity: Today you can sit at the table. Check that you’re sat in the chair properly. If your feet do not touch the floor then find yourself a box to put under the table so that your feet have something to rest on. Make sure your paper is at a slight angle – right handers write up the page, left handers write down the page!
Were there any letters you found tricky yesterday? If so, then practise those to start with. Then have go at these words:

could
about
quarter
complete
believe
Reading
What amazing reading there has been on Bug Club! You all seem to be getting the hang of it now and we are so impressed with all the correct answers you are getting!
Project
As we know from our previous lesson: light travels in straight lines! Today we will be looking at how light travels from an object to our eyes!
Today we will be exploring eyes.

Here is a diagram of an eye. Take note of the pupil in the middle. This is the part of the eye that controls how much light enters your eye.

Try the following experiment:
Get a mirror and go into a dark room (close the curtains).
Look at your pupil in the mirror with the light on. How big is it?
Turn the lights off. If the room is semi dark (you can still see yourself in the mirror) then look at your pupil again. What has happened to it?
If the room was too dark for you to see your reflection in the mirror then turn the light back on again. Look at your pupil quickly. What happened? Did you see it change shape? It happens very quickly!
Draw a diagram of the eye and label the basic parts of the eye. Write a sentence to say what happens to the pupil in bright sun light and write another sentence to say what happens to the pupil in the dark. Remember to use scientific language.

Monday 27th April 2020
Hello Year 4! Let’s get moving on a Monday morning with one of Miss Tigwell’s favourites.
This week we are going to continue being scientists and explore the concept of light!

Light
This week we are looking light (as well as sound). To start with open your book to a double page and split into 3 sections. Under one section write “What I know” under the second section write “What I want to know” and under the final section write “What I learnt”.
Before watching any of the videos below write a few facts that you know already about light under the “What I know section”. Once you have done that add some questions that you would like to find out about light under the “What I want to know section”.
Next watch the following video clips:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbssgk7/articles/z2s4xfr
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbssgk7/articles/zqdxb82
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbssgk7/articles/zp7f8mn
And finally watch this last video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PsHHKwtXQU
Note: Do not fill in the section labelled “What I learnt”
Optional:
Get a piece of paper and grab some figurines. Stand the figurines up on the piece of paper and allow light to shine on them from the side. Look at the shadows created. Draw around the shadows.
What happens when you move the light closer to the figurines? What happens when you move the light further away? Either draw the new shadows in different colours or write in your books what you observed.

Today, we are going top continue to look at time. Have a go at these worksheets.
Before you start – practise your 5 times tables using this website
https://www.timestables.co.uk/5-times-table.html
There are three important things to remember.
- The numbers on the clock represent the hours and the minutes are represented by the small dots.
- There are 60 minutes in hour so you can count in 5 minutes between the large numbers (remember that these show the hours though so you will have to count the minutes).

- After half past, we need to think about how many minutes it is until the NEXT hour. This clock shows that it is 40 minutes past the hour of 4. This means that the next hour is 5 and that it is 20 minutes until it is 5 O’Clock so the time is 20 minutes to 5.
Have a look at this PowerPoint to help you complete your task.

Something very exciting is happening this morning. The wonderful Miss Turner will be on Facebook live at 10:30 am with a wonderful dancing bonanza for us all to enjoy! Tune in and don’t miss out!

Good morning Year 4! Well done for finishing your first week as a scientist! Here is your final science task this week:
What a busy week for the Y4 sound scientists! Today, please watch this clip https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zqtxpv4 and then, if you’d like to, choose from the following activities. They’re all optional today. If you don’t have the resources for any of them, please don’t worry.
- Make a musical instrument from junk or whatever you can find in your house that you have permission to use. The clip above will help with ideas. Explain to somebody (using the key vocabulary and your posh expert voice) how the sounds are made and how you can hear them.
- OR Make a string telephone

Explain to your partner how it works, using as many of these words as you can:

- OR Make xylophone water jars
- Collect some empty and clean jars
- Put varying amounts of water in each jar.
- Tap the jars with a spoon – what do you notice about the pitch?
- Play around with the water levels in each jar and experiment with pitch!
- Maybe even compose a tune!
- Explain how the pitch changes to someone in your family – don’t forget your posh scientist voice!
Parents – this can be done with glasses too, if you’re happy for your glasses to be used! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIO-JhMvu6M

Have a great day Year 4 and all the adults wish you a very happy weekend!
Enjoy the sunshine and remember:

Thursday 23rd April 2020
Good morning Year 4! We all hope you are all managing to enjoy the sunshine again this week! What beautiful days we have been having!

It’s day 4 of the Y4 scientists learning about sound and today the theme is looking at how distance from a sound source affects the sounds we hear.
Watch this clip: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z47w2hv
You will need a partner to help you to carry out today’s investigation!
- Make a list of 5 ways that your partner could make some noises with different volumes. E.g. clapping, humming, banging a saucepan, clicking fingers, whispering etc.
- Stand next to your partner while they start the first noise (ask them to keep making it at the same volume). Walk away from your partner until you can’t hear the noise anymore.
- Try this with each noise, taking the same route away from them each time.
- When you’ve tried all five noises, compare how far away you got for each noise and discuss why you could still hear some of the noises from further away.
- Try to explain to your partner (use your best posh expert voice), using the key words you’ve learnt this week, what you can conclude from today’s investigation.
Optional
Here are some fascinating facts about sound. Can you find any more? Can you find out what dB and Hz mean? How could you present these facts and yours?

Maths
We are going to explore the 24 hour clock today. After the morning (AM) the 24 hour clock continues to count the hours until midnight when the clock refreshes again and becomes 00:00.
So after midday at 12:00 , 1 O’clock becomes the 13th hour of the day which is displayed as 13:00 on a digital 24 hour clock.
Have a go at converting these times to the 24 hour clock today.

Wednesday 22nd April 2020
Hello Year 4,
It was brilliant to see some of you helping your class to win the TTRS competition yesterday. Here are the results. Well done to the people who got so many correct answers. Don’t forget to keep practising – there will be another competition on Friday!

Congratulations Yew Tree Class you are the winners! Well done Henry you gained the top scorer spot!
Good morning, Y4 scientists! Hopefully, you enjoyed yesterday’s pitch activities. If you managed to carry out the water bottle activity, you should have discovered that the more water you added, the higher the pitch of the sound you made when you blew across the top of the bottle. This is because when the bottle has a small amount of water in it, the air molecules have lots of room and vibrate slower. Adding more water gives them less space to vibrate in, making them vibrate faster and producing a higher pitch.

Today’s science work on sound is all about volume. Of course, we know that the volume of a sound is how loud or quiet the sound is, but we’re going to look into how volume is linked to vibration.
Watch this clip: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgffr82/articles/zqtdpbk
Then, draw a cartoon in your book to illustrate what you’ve learnt about the volume of sound and the vibrations that produce loud and quiet sounds. You could use the characters and examples from the clip, make up your own characters or even put yourself in the cartoon!

Optional:
Investigate sound proofing! Some materials absorb sound, making it harder for us to hear it. To investigate which materials are good at this, you will need a sound source (a mobile phone playing a song is ideal) and some materials that you can wrap the phone in. You could try foil, bubble wrap, cling film, a flannel, a pillow case or anything else that you have at home. Keeping the phone volume the same, wrap the phone in each material and then rank them from which absorbs the most sound (the phone sounds quieter) to which absorbs the least (phone sounds louder).
Copy and complete this results table, if you’d like to.

- Isla (Yew)
Yew Tree are reading lots of books at the moment! Well done to them! Come on Hazel – Let’s get reading!
Project
Today’s scientific learning is about pitch. The pitch of a sound is how high or low the sound is. Watch this clip, which explains why and how pitch changes: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgffr82/articles/z3j3jty and now this one, which is a bit more detailed https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/ztptsbk
Ask an adult for a clean, empty bottle, if you can. If your school water bottle has a removable top, you could use that – you need an open topped bottle.
- Blow across the top of a bottle until you make a note, remember this sound.
- Add some water
- Blow across the bottle again. Is the sound the same?
- Add some more water and blow again. What do you notice?
Can you explain in your book how and why the pitch changed? Use the key words: pitch, higher, lower, water, air. We’ll give you an explanation tomorrow 😊
Optional (please, only if this can be done without disturbing adults who are working):
- Look around your house and find things that make different sounds. Decide if the pitch of each sound is high or low.
- OR If you have any drinking straws (please don’t go out or buy any specially), have a go at the straw flute activity that the children in this clip are doing: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zsqw2hv
- OR even have a go at making some pan pipes:

Good morning Year 4. We hope you had a wonderful Easter break and managed to spend some time in the sunshine!

For the next few weeks we shall be looking at a new project. For this project, we will all become Scientists and will be exploring light and sound.

Project
To start a week of scientific learning about sound, today we’d like you to find out about how sounds are made and how we hear them. Please watch these clips https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zswsbk7 https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgffr82/articles/zstr2nb https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgffr82/articles/zx9hcj6 and make some notes in your book under three headings:
- How sounds are made.
- How we hear sounds.
- How sounds can help to keep us safe.
Next, watch this clip https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/music–science-ks2-what-is-sound/zbnmhbk and add to your notes under the three headings. This one is a bit more detailed so just note the key points that go under each heading.
Optional:
Make a poster or fact sheet, using your notes, to show the main facts that you’ve learnt today. Include the key words: vibration (vibrate, vibrating), sound waves, travel, air, hear, ear. You could find a diagram of an ear to copy and label if you’d like to include that.
Maths
This week, we are going to be revisiting telling the time. We will be looking at telling the time on digital and analogue clocks. To begin with today, have a go at playing this game. Which level can you get up to?

Here is a video to help you remember how to tell the time on an analogue clock: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zqkwmp3
Please play for at least 20 minutes.

After you have practised telling the time, please log in to TTRS to practise your times tables!
Reading
Please read a book and answer questions on Bug Club today! Remember that your teacher can see how well you’re doing so answer the questions carefully and we look forward to seeing how well you are continuing to do with your reading 🙂

Easter Holidays update.
We hope you had a lovely, sunny Easter weekend with your families. We all did, although we may have eaten a few more Easter eggs than we should have done!
With less than a week to go until the summer term starts next Monday, here is a message for you from us all and a few optional ideas to keep you busy.
![]()
Optional activities:
- Colouring! If you haven’t coloured in any of the lovely colouring book which The Friends of Park Gate gave you, why not get out those new pencils that came with it and choose your favourite page to colour in?
- Design your dream bedroom! Draw a plan for the room of your dreams. Let your imagination go wild and include things that might be possible one day! Miss Quinn would include a bed that she wouldn’t need to get out of to get ready for work. The bed would float her from her bedroom all the way to her classroom and reappear after work to float her home again. Mrs Kirkpatrick would design a room where the walls would change and surprise her every morning with exciting new patterns and decorations. Mrs Thwaites would like a room where she could wake up and announce what she would like for breakfast and her bedside unit would open up and the breakfast would be there! It would be delicious too!
- Learn how to say “Hello” in lots of languages! Here are 10 to get you started:
Bengali – Namaskar
Chinese – Nǐ hǎo
Danish – God dag
French – Bonjour
German – Guten tag
Icelandic – Góðan dag
Italian – Salve
Norwegian – Hallo
Spanish – Hola
Turkish – Merhaba
You could find more if you’d like! You could make a poster (maybe find the flags of the countries and include those on your poster?) or a matching pairs game to match the greeting to the country to help you learn as many as you can.
- Inspired by Joe Wicks? How about designing your own workout? You could choose an exercise for each letter of your name. e.g. someone called Jack could do:
J = 10 bunny hops
A = 5 jumping jacks
C = 8 arm circles
K = 7 squats
You could make up a personal workout like this for each member of your household. If you’ve got any chalk and you have permission, you could write each name in big letters outside and do each exercise on the relevant letter.
Remember, these are just optional activities. If you do decide to do any, parents are welcome, if you’d like to, to post pictures on the school’s new Facebook page for us to see.
Enjoy the rest of the holidays!
Best wishes from the Y4 team.

HAPPY EASTER!
Today is the last day before the Easter break! We hope you have enjoyed completing your learning on the blog for the last 2 weeks.
It is now time for a break, to enjoy spending time with your families!
Learning for the Easter holidays:
Please continue to play on TTRS and don’t forget to read the amazing books you have been allocated on Bug Club!
There will also be new updates on the blog every few days throughout the holidays if you fancy an update on what we are all up to and ideas to keep you entertained.
English
To finish off our piratey week, today’s task is to design your own Treasure Island!
If you had your own desert island, what would you want it to look like? You may want to use your knowledge of Iceland to inspire you.
Think about:
- What shape is it?
- What sort of plants grow there? What food goes on the plants there?
- Is there a beach? What does this look like?
- What features of physical geography does it have? Are there mountains, volcanoes or waterfalls?
- Is there any human geography on the island? There could be huts, shipwrecks, jetties or stone statues.
Maths
Read these problems and decide if they are multiplication or division and use times tables facts to solve the calculation.
Remember to use this grid to help you decide what maths you need to solve the problem.

Some extra fun for the weekend:
Create your own pirate parchment to write up your poem in neat! The best way to do this is to get a plain piece of white paper, wet a tea bag with cold water and then spread the tea bag over to paper to make it go brown. Allow the paper to dry fully before writing your poem on it!

We hope you had a lovely first day of April yesterday and didn’t fall for any April fools pranks.

Writing
Editing writing

Cap’n Quinn’s crew are not great spellers, unlike the children in Y4! They especially get homophones confused (words which sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings, like which and witch). Cap’n Quinn would like you to give her a hand with marking – please copy out the passage below and correct the spelling mistakes as you go. Underline the words that you correct. Thank you!
Ship’s Log Day 54
As wee sailed across the salty, blew see towards the island, we thought we spotted a fin, witch was sticking up out of the water. It was write their, in front of the ship, and we thought that we wood hit it! We were shore it was a shark! Fortunately, Cap’n Quinn had spotted it and steered the ship in the other direction, saving the ship from being damaged or braking up! It was very close and we were worried that they’re mite be more sharks around to crash into the ship, ore worse, to eat us, sew we changed coarse and sailed off in a knew direction. What a day!
Maths

Now that you are all more confident with multiplication let’s have a look at using times tables to solve division calculations.
Practise your times tables first and then use these facts to solve division calculations.
e.g 2 x 9 = 18 so 18 ÷ 2 = 9 and 18 ÷ 9 = 2
There are 2 division sheets to have a go at. Why not time yourself and then see if you can beat your time on the next go.
There are also answer sheets so you can mark your work and check your score!
Enrichment task

If you were going to bury a chest full of treasure, what would you bury and why? In your book write your reasons for adding your chosen items to the chest.
Optional challenge:
You could find a box and put your precious items in the box. Please remember to keep your house tidy and try not to bother your parents if they are busy working. Why not decorate a spare shoe box by wrapping it in paper and colouring it in or painting it?

Pirate diary

Today, you and your crew get your diving gear on and dive off the ship to explore beneath the sea. Maybe you see beautiful sea creatures? Maybe a wreck? Do you encounter any dangerous sea creatures and have a lucky escape?
Write the diary of your dive. Remember to make adventurous vocabulary choices and to show your reader how you’re feeling by describing your body reactions (my heart pounded, my head was spinning etc.)
Maths

Today we are going to continue to practise the multiplication method we looked at yesterday when solving some worded problems.
If you are stuck on the method, go back and have a look at the video from yesterday.
amber – apologies that some of these involved 2 digit x 2 digits please do not complete these
Enrichment task
Create your own imaginative sea creature! You can either draw your creature or create your creature out of junk modelling. Think carefully about what your sea creature looks like. Could it survive in the water with a human nose? Probably not.

Tuesday 31st March 2020
Good morning!
We hope you all had a wonderful Monday!
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank your parents for all the lovely feedback we have been receiving about the blog. As a team, we really appreciate it and we are enjoying staying connected with you via the blog. We hope you are all having a wonderful time spending time with one another and are able to get some of your own work done! 🙂

Message in a bottle.
Today, imagine you and your pirate crew are on an exotic island. Write a message (letter) that you could send off the island in a bottle. You could tell your recipient how you got to the island, what you do all day, what you eat and how you plan to get off the island.
Maths
Let’s revisit the Year 4 multiplication method. This method helps us to use multiplication facts and strategies to multiply together larger numbers and solve more complicated calculations. We have not practised this method for a while so Miss Quinn has videoed a tutorial for you to watch. Please watch these videos.
Here are some calculations for you to try:
Enrichment activity
Using a page in your home learning books, create an outside design for a bottle for your message to go in.
Think about how you could draw people’s attention to the bottle if they spotted it on a beach somewhere.
Optional extra:
Please remember to keep your house tidy and try not to bother your parents if they are busy working!
Using some recycling create your own bottle for your letter to fit into. Decorate your bottle in a piratey manner. You can use anything you like to decorate your bottle. You could colour it using pens, paint it or even use materials to make a collage on your bottle. Look at the examples to give you some ideas!

If you’d prefer to write this on paper to be posted, please just note in your book that you’ve done this.
Maths

As this work involves methods practise, please use a calculator to check your answers. There is a calculator on most phones and computers or they can found in most app stores on tablets. Do 5 and check your answers. If you have done some wrong, don’t worry – just give them another go!

Dear Year 4 children and adults at home,
We wanted to provide you with a little more information about how Year 4’s learning at home will be set each day.
Every evening, we will upload the learning for the next day. Each post will include a spelling or handwriting activity which should take around 20 minutes. As well as this, there will be daily writing and maths tasks that should take around an hour each to complete. We understand that this a tricky time for adults to be working from home so we have aimed to design activities that children can complete as independently as possible. Reading should also be competed everyday – just like in school. We have sent each child home with 2 library books and everyone will be allocated 2 books every week on the wonderful Bug Club. Please also continue to record reading with an adult in your reading records to count towards earning your next reading star! There will also be a fun and creative enrichment task to complete everyday – please spend as much time on this as you like!
We would also like to take this opportunity to send our best wishes to you all at this tricky time! We are already missing you all! Please keep in contact and we will be here any time to answer any questions you may have or provide any support you may need!
Keep smiling!

Miss Quinn, Mrs Thwaites, Mrs Kirkpatrick, Mrs Fast, Mrs Brown, Miss Tigwell, Mrs Humphries, Mrs Rowley and Miss Wall.
