Welcome to Learning at Home for Holly and Lime class super stars!
Friday 22nd May 2020
Good Morning everyone,
This is a quick note for the grownups! The loading of the blog is beginning to slow down and so we will archive the work so far in order to start fresh after the holidays. Hopefully this will be more helpful.
We would like to use the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl to base a few weeks work for our English after the holidays. We think that this will be enjoyed by the children and most adults! We will be linking in chapters that are read on line and snippets from the book, along with short video clips. If you could let us know by email if you will find it difficult to access the film, old or new at home. It will be really helpful if children have access to the whole film and even better a copy of the book.
It is not essential if you do not have it and we can work around this.

We love receiving your work and we will continue to enjoy this next half term.
Keep Sending!!!!
Thursday 21st May 2020

Hello Year 2, gosh Thursday already, this week seems to be flying by! We hope you had a wonderful day yesterday and managed to get out in the sunshine to play. At the beginning of the week we mentioned that today’s English is the activity to email back to us however Mrs Beazley and Mrs Lock have been chatting and thought you may like to spend 2 days on this activity so that you have time to go back and edit your work and enjoy some sunshine.
To start the day off in a peaceful way let’s try some mindful meditation, called Movies in my Mind.
Spellings of the day
Today we would like you to have a go at your spellings when writing your postcard and when you have finished have a check and see if you can correct the more common words you have used.
Phonics:
Learning objective: I can identify different ways to write /oa/.
Today we are going to be looking at alternative spellings for the /oa/ sound. Have a look at the best guess poster for hints on how the sound can be written and where to find it in a word.
Please follow the link on phonics play to the phase 5, alternative spellings for the /oa/ sound.
https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/oaAltSpellings.html
Username: March20 Password: home
Have a go at the activity phoneme spotter and then the word sort.
English / Geography
Today and tomorrow we would like you to write a postcard, similar to Supertato.
You can choose who you would like to write a postcard to. You can choose where you visit. You can use the ideas from the video clips, the postcards that you have read this week or from your own holidays or days out.

Here is a template that you can click on and use, or you could draw your own in your book or on paper:
We have included a word mat for you to help you with your word choices and spellings: You will need to include
conjunctions correct punctuation tidy handwriting
How did you feel? What did you see? What was the weather like?
Think of something that you thought was amazing or really interesting.
You can draw the picture for your postcard or find a suitable picture.
Maths:
Today we are going to be working on our 5 times table.
Please watch the video in the link below.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhn6pg8
Now have a read of this help sheet to remind you about arrays, repeated addition and multiplication. There is even a top tip!
Activity:
Have a look at these four different representations of 5s.
Can you show each one as:
- an array
- a repeated addition
- a multiplication sentence
- a bar model
One more thing to try this week:
Have you tried the ‘draw on my back’ challenge? You will need to have someone else with you to do this challenge- your brother sister or an adult. Get someone to draw on a piece of paper attached to your back. You then have to feel the movement of their pen, and try to copy them on your own piece of paper.
If you’re really in sync you’ll hopefully end up with similar pictures…but it’s often even funnier when they’re completely different. Here is a video on Newsround about it:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52680418
Have a fabulous day!

A little song to get us warmed up !
Welcome to today’s activities. We would like you to complete and send us the English activity about riddles when you can. Due to this we will plan less activities today so you have time to spend on achieving the best piece of writing that you can.
English
Click on the link below for your English riddle activity. You will need to look at this week’s examples of riddles from yesterday and those written by Mrs Short, Mrs Fuller and Ms Wall. There are hints on the veggie riddle link.
Write it in your book using the lines to help you. Have a go at spelling and then see if an adult can help you correct any muddles.
Maths
Look for numbers that you can add or subtract to find the card that shows the answer, such as 13+7= 20 20-7=13
Only use the numbers and totals on these cards.
What do you already know? Use counters to help you if you need.
In this challenge you need to make each row (numbers going across) and column (numbers going down) to make 100. Remember to use your number bonds to 10 knowledge to help you with this.
So for example in the second row you could add the 2 numbers to begin with 50 + 20 = ? Then work out how many more you need to make 100. OR you could start with 100 and subtract to find out the missing number. 100 – 50 -20 = ?
You can also count in multiples of 10 to find the missing numbers
Reading
Today we would like you to read the text called Carrot Club. It is about a group of vegetables and a club they have created!
At the end of the text there are 3 different sets of questions. You will notice that they have stars at the bottom of the page- they are for the different level of challenge.
1 star = the easiest 2 stars= a little more tricky 3 stars = the most challenging.
We think you could do the 3 stars questions as you are all super star readers, so we have copied these into the document below, the answers are there too.

Some fun activities that you may want to enjoy over the bank holiday as well as today.
Good morning Year 2! Something a little different to start the day with …
Music
Enjoy the video above of Katherine Jenkins and Vera Lynn singing “We’ll Meet Again” 5 years ago.
Now, it is your turn to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day! Have a go at singing along with the lyrics below ready for this year’s Albert Hall performance. Look at this link for a reminder: https://parkgateprimary.home.blog/2020/05/04/ve-day-concert/
English and History
When you can, research who Vera Lynn and her significance for the VE Day Celebrations. If you ever met her, what questions would you like to ask her? Write these into your book. Think about using question words such as, where, what, why, when and who. Next week, it would be great if you could send us your questions so we can compile them and hopefully send them to Dame Vera Lynn herself!
Maths and DT
The weather forecast is good so try making a range of paper (or whatever you can use) Spitfire aeroplanes. Using your measuring skills, see how far they travel. Make sure you start each plane form the same point so it is fair. Think about the shape of the planes you make and why one may be more successful than another? You could even colour it in, to make it look just like Spitfire. You’ll never guess they were made, and first flown, down the road in Eastleigh.
Enrichment Activity – Dance
The Lindy-hop was a favourite dance during wartime and was used as a celebration for VE day because of its upbeat rhythm and high tempo. Here is a favourite piece of music from a member of the Year 2 team (I wonder if you can guess who it is!) and your challenge is to make up your own dance ready for Friday. The video below, and the music, will give you a bit of inspiration. Get all the family involved, we would love to seem them on our Facebook post!
If you are in the mood for more learning, don’t forget to check the link for VE day from the Monday blog or look for earlier activities that you may not have had a chance to complete from previous days. Have a good weekend from all in Year 2!!!!
Yesterday’s Maths Solutions
Wednesday 6th May 2020

Hello Year 2 it’s Mrs Lock here. I hope that you are well and have had a lovely week so far. Just to remind you, today your Maths and Project work is the work we would love to celebrate with you. If you could please ask your adult at home to email it back to us either by taking a photo of your work, scanning it if you can or sending it in a document. Once you have completed your learning job, send it over when you are ready and we will try our hardest to reply as soon as possible. I know Mrs Beazley and I are super excited to see your learning and celebrate with you how well you are doing.
Before we begin today I just wanted to share with you a few pages from a beautiful book I have recently read called ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and Horse’.

The author and illustrator is Charlie Macksey. You may have seen his book or some of his images before. They are truly stunning and so very positive. Throughout the book you are introduced to 4 different characters you never learn their names but you follow them on their journey through life. The book is about kindness, friendship and love, something I feel we all need right now. I wanted to share with you some of my favourite quotes this morning. I hope that they make you smile your best smile and make your heart feel happy just like I felt when I read them.
To get you moving this morning let’s try a Just Dance. This is a song that I play to make me smile, Noah loves it too! We are going to start our morning off with a boogie in our sitting room to this song, I hope you will join in with us! 🙂

English/Project Work:
Using the information you have learnt about healthy eating, what would you put in your lunchbox?

Why don’t you ask if you can have a healthy packed lunch in the garden or on a picnic cloth in the house? We would like you to draw the food in the lunch box and write a few sentences about why you have chosen each food using the names of the foods, the type of food it is and some description about its taste, texture or smell. You could draw your own lunchbox. Label the names of the food.
We will be looking to see if you have remembered your neat handwriting some editing of your own spellings and if you have learnt new facts about healthy eating. Please try and send this work to us by email so we can send you a message as we know you are working hard.
Please click here for the task or feel free to draw your own in your book:
Reading :
Bug Club– Today we would like you to read one book on Bug Club and answer the questions to go with it.
Just a quick reminder:
A few of you are near to the end on your current level. Before moving on to the next colour please can we ask that you read quite a few of the books again so that you can develop your fluency, story teller voice, expression and intonation. If you are confidently reading the books with very little stop starting and using a super story teller voice then move on to the next colour level.
VE Day Enrichment Activities:
Well done for everyone who has created amazing bunting. We were very excited to have seen a few of your buntings on the Fareham Borough Council Facebook page! There is still time to do this activity if you haven’t had a chance yet. You are welcome to share it on our Facebook page or the Council’s page.

These are some of the real medals from World War 2. Each medal has a different meaning. Some medals were given for an individual act of bravery, some for phenomenal service. Each type of medal was different so people knew what the medals were for. They had different ribbons, clasps and emblems on them.
We thought that you would like to have a go at creating your very own medal in honour of the 75th anniversary of VE day. Here is an example of one that was designed for the celebration.
Please click on this link for a sheet for you to design your own medal and ideas of what you could include.
Another activity you may like to try it to create your own replica Spitfire aeroplane.
Mrs Beazley and I hope you have a fabulous day. We are very excited to see your wonderful learning. One last Charlie Mackesy quote to leave you with.

Project work:
To start our project work off today watch this fabulous story called Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish by Michael Foreman.
Today we are going to be learning about recycling.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z9p9j6f
We would like you to look at the rubbish that you throw out in your house.
Do you help your adults at home to recycle?
How do you sort what goes in your recycling bin and what goes in your rubbish bin?
Have a little look at the items in your recycling bin if it is safe to do so (remember to check with your adult first). What materials are your recycling rubbish made out of?

Did you notice this symbol on some of your recycling rubbish? You may have seen this symbol before. Here is a video teaching you all about this symbol and about the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Today we would like you to create a poster that you can either display in your window or save for us to put up at school all about the 3 R’s- reduce, reuse, recycle.
You could include pictures of the things you can recycle at home, draw pictures of what you could do to reuse and what people can do to reduce their waste (such as bring reusable cups for take away drinks). Make it as colourful as you can to make people stop and want to look at your poster. Remember to make your writing clear so that everyone can read your important message. We would love to see your fabulous posters on our Facebook page so when your adult is free, please ask them if they could share your learning with us.

SPAG activity:
A suffix is a letter or group of letters that goes on the end of a word and changes the word’s meaning.
Sometimes they also change the original word’s spelling. When adding a suffix you might have to double the last letter. For example when adding the suffix ‘ed‘ to the word ‘drop‘ you also double the p so it becomes ‘dropped‘.
Some suffixes have specific uses. Adding ‘ing’ can change a noun into a verb, e.g. ‘garden’ becomes ‘gardening‘. While ‘ed’ can make a verb into the past tense, e.g. ‘jump’ becomes ‘jumped‘.
Watch the video and then complete the quiz at the bottom of the page.

Learning objective: I can answer addition and subtraction word problems.
For today’s maths we have some addition and subtraction challenge cards for you to do.
Mrs Beazley has made a ‘draw it, plan it, do it, check it’ prompt sheet to help you to work the answers out.
Draw it, Plan it, Do it and Check it How can I answer the problems
Try this way of helping you work out a problem. We have used this strategy in school and we are sure you can use your own ideas and find a way of solving these problems… have a go and we look forward to see your maths creativity if you want to post it on Facebook. If the numbers are too high in the problems change the numbers to ones you are happier to work out.
challenge cards – the answers are on the last page of the document
Easier challenge cards- the answers are on the last page of the document
If you are finding these challenges too tricky here are two number line activities for you to do.
Project Work:
We have two activities for you today:
- Learning objective: I can sort words alphabetically.
Your first challenge today is to sort weather words alphabetically. Open the document below and put the words in alphabetical order. You can write the words in your book and decorate them with pictures that show the weather.
- Learning objective: I can write a weather report.
The second activity is to write up today’s weather report. Using your weather chart that you have filled in today, please can you write up today’s weather as a weather report.
Can you use any expanded noun phrases (gloriously, hot sunshine or sparkly, cold snow)?
How about trying some alliteration- remember alliteration is where the first letter of the words are the same- (whirling wind, sparkling snow).
What about challenging yourself to include a simile? (the wind is howling like a wolf)
You could ask an adult to film you reading your weather report and share it with your family, friends or even on our Facebook page. We would love to see them!

Can you practise writing these words in different colours? How about putting them into sentences? Here is a challenge for you, can you write one sentence with all 4 words in it!
Project Work:

This week we are going to be learning about the environment. We will be beginning with weather. To start us off Mrs Beazley has found this fabulous book! It is in the same series of books as the Titanic book that we used in school recently.
To kick start our environment week we would love for you to begin keeping a weather diary. Each day we would like you to record the weather for your area. Here is a diary that you can print or you can record the symbols into your home learning book each day.
When you watch a weather forecast or you record the weather you will see they use symbols to represent the different weather.

Mrs Lock has just checked the weather forecast for the week in Southampton and it looks like rain is coming. If you follow this link you can see the weather forecast from the Met Office https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/forecast/gcp185f25#?date=2020-04-26
Here is an overview of this coming weeks weather for Southampton:

Although the sun has been lovely the past few weeks, we do really enjoy splashing in puddles too. Rain is great news for the gardens but also for our investigating this week. We would like you to set up a rain gauge so that you can measure how much it has rained throughout the day. To do this you may need an adult. Try having a go before asking your adult to help you, or if you have a brother or sister that can help ask them first. Mrs Lock has set one up in her garden, because she didn’t have a bottle she has used a jug and taped a ruler to the side of it. This maybe a way that you can make it yourself as we know your adults are super busy. Click here to see how you can make a rain gauge at home:
Once you have made your rain gauge you need to set a time each day to measure how much it has rained. Remember to check each day at the same time and then empty whatever is in it ready for the next day.
Explore this super website that has amazing facts about weather. Today please look at the rain section. http://www.weatherforkids.org/rain.html
In the enrichment activities that are also some more ways that you can record the weather each day if you fancy doing a bit more recording and investigating.
Maths:

For today’s maths activities you need to follow this link.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z6tv382
Please watch the video and then have a go at the three money challenges. To do challenge 1 you could have a look around your house to see if you could find the coins you need or you could make your own using a the inside of a cereal box. Challenge 3 is lots of fun too.
Enrichment tasks: remember these are activities that you can try throughout the week.
- Switch it off– Take a look at all the electrical devices in your house. Are they all plugged in? Do they need to be plugged in? Create a poster to place around the house to help remind people to switch off electrical devices once they have finished with them.
- Weather reporter– Watch the weather report on T.V. How do they describe the weather? What do you notice about the map? Can you find Southampton on the map? Have they got symbols when they are talking about the weather? Pick a day that you would like to present as a weather reporter. Can you create some symbols to use when you are talking about the weather? Can you talk about the weather in your local area and maybe compare to another place in the UK? Here is a map for you to use to help you. United Kingdom map
- Wind experiment– you will need an adult to help you with this one. wind experiment
- Create a model using recycled materials in your house.
- Create a picture of you in your favourite type of weather. Think about what you would be wearing, what would you be doing? You can use anything to create this picture-pencils, paint, bits and pieces from around your house to make a collage, be creative!
Friday 24th April 2020

Good morning Year 2
We hope that you are all smiling and happy today. What another beautiful day it was yesterday, we hope that you had a fabulous day. Have you noticed how the plants and trees are changing and growing so much at the moment? We have loved seeing your smiling faces and all of your wonderful learning on Facebook this week, each picture has made us really smile. We all miss you so very much and are so proud of you.
Don’t forget that today at 10.30 Miss Turner is dancing LIVE on Facebook! We hope you will be tuned in to see her funky moves and join in having a Park Gate party in your own home, the Year 2 adults definitely will be!
Next week we will be learning all about weather and the environment.
To warm you up for next weeks learning watch this video on Newsround which shows this week’s environment news. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/51376710
Remember the Times Tables Rock Star Battle is still on until Sunday. When we checked last night Lime class were in the lead by almost 1000 points! Well done Lime class! Let’s see who wins after all of your fantastic battling over the next 3 days. We will let you know who has won on Monday morning.
English:
Today we would like you to finish off your amazing animal information page that you started yesterday. Please remember to go back through what you have written to check your spellings using the word mat in your home learning book. Also can you make your word choices any more exciting? You could use a thesaurus, if you have one at home, to help you with this.
If you have done all of that, please can you add a section describing similarities and differences between your chosen animal and another animal. For example Mrs Lock would write, the Okapi has a similar neck to a giraffe because it is long and slender however the giraffes neck is a lot longer and it doesn’t have brown stripy legs like an okapi.
Now it is time to present your learning to your family! You could even video call friends and other family too and teach them everything you have learnt this week. You should feel very proud of your learning. If you get the chance and your adult has a spare minute please can you ask them to take a photo and put it on the Facebook page for all of Year 2 to see?
Maths:
Learning objective: I can answer addition and subtraction questions.
Addition and subtraction Friday
Mrs Lock has created a video for you reminding you how to add and subtract using an unstructured number line.
Here is a video reminding you how you can use partitioning to help you add 2 digit numbers together.
Don’t forget you can also use the plan, draw, write, check method that we use in school to help you work out your answers.
Phonics:
Learning objective: I can identify different ways to write /ee/.
Today we are going to be looking at alternative spellings for the /ee/ sound. Have a look at the best guess poster in the link below for hints on how the sound can be written and where to find it in a word.
Please follow the link on phonics play to the phase 5, alternative spellings for the /ee/ sound.

Thursday 23rd April 2020

Good morning to each and every one of you. The Year 2 adults have loved finding out about their animals. Did you know red pandas can eat around 20,000 delicious bamboo leaves in a day! Humboldt penguins can reach the speed of 20 to 30 miles per hour, and dive to a depth of 492 feet to find food! Badgers have stocky bodies with short legs that are suitable for digging. What is your most interesting fact about your animal?
Here is some of the information Mrs Beazley has found out about Red Pandas!
Here’s a little joke to get you started today:
Where do cows go on Saturday nights?
To the MOOO-vies!
English:
Today is the day… you are going to begin writing up your information leaflet, poster or fact-file which ever you have chosen to do. This activity is for today and tomorrow’s English learning- although tomorrow we are also going to do some editing, so take your time to make sure it is truly amazing.
Remember to include a heading (for example: Outstanding Okapi’s) and subheadings (such as Diet, Appearance).
You need to use the notes that you made yesterday and put these into sentences.
Remember to:
- Make sure your letters are snuggled together, the same height and have bumps and flicks.
- Use a range of punctuation– full stops, commas, question marks ? and exclamation marks !
- Use noun phrases (such as delicate, elongated tail) and exciting vocabulary choices. So instead of using the word long you could use: elongated, extensive or stretched.
- Use a range of conjunctions– and, because, but, so, or, when, if.
- Check it makes sense. Read it back using monkey ears.

Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Happy Wednesday everyone! We are super excited to see your home learning this week, we will put a comment on the main Facebook page so that you can pop photos of your learning on there when your adult has a moment free. We hope that you are enjoying it so far, we are certainly loving seeing all of your learning at home photos.
Look what we found yesterday on the Edinburgh Zoo website… they have live webcam footage of different animals! Sometimes you have to wait a little while for the animals to appear as they are not always exactly where the camera is pointed, but they do turn up so it is worth being patient. https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/panda-cam/
Also, follow this link to the BBC website which has some amazing videos teaching you all about animals. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z6882hv
This video is Mrs Lock’s favourite one on the page- it is about animals around the world.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z7p6n39
After watching this it inspired Mrs Lock to draw animals from around the world with Noah and place them on a large world map. It was lots of fun, maybe this is something you could try at home too?
English:
Learning Objective: I can label a picture.
Today please can you draw your chosen animal and then label it ready for when you present your animal to your family.
Can you write a caption under it using expanded noun phrases, similes, alliteration, suffixes? E.g. A scary brave lion has a powerful, deafening roar as loud as thunder.
Here is an example of a labelled picture Mrs Lock has done.

Maths:
Learning objective: I can solve a length problem.
Mrs Beazley says that if you stretch out your arms wide and you measure from the middle finger on your left hand to the middle finger on your right hand this is exactly how tall you are?
Is Mrs Beazley right?
To do this you need to investigate by measuring everyone in your house.
You will need to measure how tall they are from the top of their head to the bottom of their feet and then measure the distance between their hands when they are stretched out. If you have your friends telephone number you could ask an adult when they have time to call them and compare your findings. You could also put this on the Facebook page and see if you all come up with the same answer? I wonder if Mrs Beazley is right?

Miss Bisley has set you one final challenge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff.
Click here to see your learning for today.
Look what we found- this is a different version of the Three Billy Goats Gruff called The Three Billy Goats Fluff! It made us chuckle and we thought you would like it too.
Have a wonderful day Year 2. Remember to smile lots, have fun and follow the Park Gate Way.
Tuesday 21st April 2020

Hello Year 2!
What a glorious day it was yesterday, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. Have you been hearing more birds recently? For the first time for as long as Mrs Lock has lived in her house she had two Goldfinches visit! Noah was very excited to see them and wanted to feed them… Albie (Mrs Lock’s cheeky cat) on the other hand thought they looked very tasty! Don’t worry Year 2 the birds were too clever for Albie and they flew off before he got too close. What birds have been visiting your garden? This is a fabulous website to help you identify the birds in your garden. https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-kids/facts-about-nature/
How did you do with the alphabetical challenge yesterday? It was quite tricky wasn’t it especially the letters U, X and Y!
Now for today… drum roll please year 2…
English:
We are very excited to announce that this week you are in charge!
You get to choose what animal you would like to learn about and then teach your family on Friday! Then you get to choose if you want to create an amazing fact-file, a fabulous leaflet or a phenomenal poster about your animal to help you teach your family.
Try and choose an animal that they may not know a lot about so you can amaze them with your knowledge. Mrs Lock is going to be learning about the okapi, Mrs Beazley has chosen the red panda, Mrs Nailer is researching Humboldt penguins, Mrs Short has chosen a chameleon, Ms Wall will be learning about flamingos, Miss Bisley wants to teach her family about meerkats and Mrs Fuller is excited to learn about badgers. What do you want to learn about?
Learning Objective: I can research an animal and make notes about them.
Today for your home learning you will be finding facts and creating notes under the following headings:
Appearance:
Habitat:
Diet:
Interesting Facts:
You may want to begin with asking your family what they would like to know about your chosen animal which will help to give you questions to research.
To help you research your animal you may want to use any books you have at home, or you could use the Internet- Longleat, Marwell Zoo and Edinburgh Zoo have amazing information pages about the different animals that live there.
This website is great for finding basic facts. https://ypte.org.uk/factsheets/browse
Or you could Google a question about your animal- for example: What do okapi’s eat?
Remember when you write your notes they are not full sentences just the key bits of information.
Mrs Lock has started to write her notes about an okapi.
Okapi
Appearance: 4 black and white striped legs similar to zebra
long sturdy neck
dark brown velvety fur on shoulders stomach, neck and head
elongated narrow tail
30-36 cm long blue tongue
The better your notes the more amazing your writing will be. Good Luck!
Maths:
Learning Objective: I can measure using a ruler or tape measure.
We were completely inspired by Andrew’s maths on Facebook and thought you would all like to have a go at this activity.

Today we would like you to make a ramp- this could be using your stairs and a piece of cardboard, a toy garage if you have one, or even using building blocks or a pile of books and a cereal box opened up.
You need to find 3 different objects that can roll down it (toilet roll tube, toy car, small ball- or even different sized cars if you have them).
We want you to predict how far each will go. Which object or toy do you think will go the furthest?
You need to measure how far they all go. Measure from the bottom of the ramp to see how far they travelled along the floor.
Andrew challenged himself by seeing which car was the fastest as well- he started to time each object from the top of the ramp and ended the timer when the object reached a certain point on the floor.
Is the fastest car the one that went the furthest distance?
Challenge:
What happens if you make your ramp higher? Does this change how far your cars or toys go?
Click on this link and move with Mr Pumpernickel to learn about length and height.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1-maths-length-height/zdrx92p
Reading:
Miss Bisley has written you some retrieval questions about the Three Billy Goats Gruff. Remember to use the Retrieval Viper for this- you need to find the words in the text to answer your questions.
Answers to Tuesday’s reading task
Monday 20th April 2020

Hello fabulous Year 2! We are all missing you so much and hope that you had a wonderful Easter with your family. We hope that you enjoyed the sunshine when it was out and had lots of fun. We are very excited to be starting your home learning again, we hope you are excited too. It was so lovely to see lots of your smiling faces on the Facebook page sharing your home learning that you have done so far and we can’t wait to share some more amazing challenges with you. Also Happy Birthday to Mrs Beazley today! We hope you have a lovely sun filled day.

Have you seen that Longleat are doing a virtual safari on their website? This is one of Mrs Lock’s favourite places to go with her family and she was super excited to see they are doing this online safari. We hope you enjoy watching it. This has inspired us to have an animal themed week this week!
If you click on this website below this will begin your animal exploration!
https://www.longleat.co.uk/news/longleat-launches-virtual-safari
English:

Here is an alphabetical challenge- this is one that has taken all the adult a long time to complete!
- To start you need to write out all the letters of the alphabet down the page.
- Now can you think of an animal that starts with each letter?
Super challenge: can you put these animals in alphabetical order?
Red panda Rhino Rabbit Raccoon Rat Ring-tailed lemur
Here are some possible answers for the A-Z challenge and the answers for the super challenge:
alphabetical order challenge answers
Maths:
Over the next three days we are going to be exploring measuring length. Today’s challenge is for you to find 5 objects from around your house and order them from the smallest to the largest.
Using a tape measure or ruler can you measure how long they are in centimetres? Remember we write this as cm.
What is the difference in size between the smallest and longest object? Can you show me how you worked this out in a number statement?
If you need a little reminder of how to measure using a tape measure or a ruler watch this video.
If you cannot find a ruler or a tape measure in your house try using objects that are all the same size- such as the small pieces of lego, blocks, pasta shapes- anything really as long as the objects are all the same size.
Reading:
Well done for reading so many books on Bug Club and answering so many questions! Mrs Beazley, Mrs Lock, Mrs Nailer and Miss Bisley have really been enjoying reading the answers to the questions that you type in. Remember we can see all the books you have read and the answers to your questions. Keep up the super reading.
Click below for today’s reading challenge using a story we know you love!
Animal Enrichment Tasks for the week:
These are just a few ideas of different activities for you to choose do over the next week. You do not need to do all of these just whichever ones you think you would enjoy- please feel free to share pictures of anything you have loved doing on the school Facebook page for us to see.
- Create a bookmark with animal facts on it to give to someone or use yourself.
- Sketch, paint or collage your favourite animal. You could turn this into a card that you could write for someone you miss.
- Can you learn how to Makaton sign 5 different animals? If you need a hand to learn these- Mr Tumble on CBeebies is great as is Singing Hands on YouTube.
- Create a mask: Using different materials from around the house, create a mask of your favourite animal. Think about the colours and shape. Can you add different textures to your mask?
- Animals around the world- Using a map, can you place animals around the world in different continents? How are their habitats different? Why?
- Create an animal using bits and pieces from your house- have a look in the recycling there are usually some fab bits for making models in there!
- Create a minibeast home outside in your garden. Think about what a minibeast would like in it and what they would need. Make it and then pop back in a few days time to see who has moved in!
- Have a go at this Cosmic Kids Yoga adventure.
Don’t forget to take photos and ask your adult when they are free to share your home learning with us on the school Facebook page.
Friday 3rd April 2020

Happy Friday Year 2 and well done for completing your second week of home learning. We hope you have been having lots of fun at home. Mrs Nailer has been re-reading a book she enjoyed as a child called ‘The Long Winter’. Ms Wall is enjoying reading ‘Hero on a Bicycle’ which looks like a fascinating book. For your last day of home learning before the Easter break we have some super exciting challenges for you, we really hope you enjoy doing them.
English:
Mrs Lock loves chickens, although she was secretly hoping they may have been dragon eggs! As you know Mrs Lock is reading ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. This is one of her favourite sections. It is when Hagrid’s dragon egg is about to hatch and he is excited to see that Harry, Ron and Hermoine are heading towards his hut just in time.
“It’s nearly out.” Hagrid ushered them inside.
The egg was lying on the table. There were deep cracks in it. Something was moving inside; a funny clicking noise was coming from it.
They all drew their chairs up to the table and watched with bated breath.
All at once there was a scraping noise and the egg split open. The baby dragon flopped onto the table. It wasn’t exactly pretty; Harry thought it looked like a crumpled, black umbrella. Its spiny wings were huge compared to its skinny jet body, it had a long snout with wide nostrils, the stubs of horns and bulging, orange eyes.
It sneezed. A couple of sparks flew out of its snout.
“Isn’t he beautiful ?” Hagrid murmured. He reached out a hand to stroke the dragon’s head. It snapped at his fingers, showing pointed fangs.
“Bless him, look, he knows his mommy!” said Hagrid.
“Hagrid,” said Hermione, “how fast do Norwegian Ridgebacks grow, exactly?”
Today we would like you to design your own dragon! This can be using information you have previously read, films you have seen or just make your own one up. Could you create a fact file or a top trump card for your dragon. Don’t forget to draw your dragon too.
We would love to know:
What is your dragon called?
Can you describe its appearance? (what it looks like)
What is its habitat? (where does it live)
What is its diet? (what does it like to eat)
Does it have any special skills or powers?
How does it move?
Any other interesting facts?
We would love to see some of your dragons on the school facebook page. If your adult has a free minute you could ask them to please share it with us to see.
Maths:
Today we would like for you to find the different addition and subtraction number statements you can do using these numbers:
21, 34, 42, 56
Can you show your thinking using a bar model and an unstructured number line?
Reading:
Role on the wall
Using a character from a book that you are reading now or your favourite character from a different book please can you complete the role on the wall. You need to fill in the different sections about your chosen character remembering to give examples from the book to support why you think that.
Example of a completed role on the wall
Bug Club–
Well done to those of you who have read so many of the books you have been issued on Bug Club and completing lots of questions. We have noticed a few of you are near to the end on your current level. Before moving on to the next colour please can we ask that you read quite a few of the books again so that you can develop your fluency, story teller voice, expression and intonation. If you are confidently reading the books with very little stop starting and using a super story teller voice then move on to the next colour level.
Enrichment tasks– these are just a few ideas of different activities for you to choose do over the next couple of weeks. You do not need to do all of these just whichever ones you think you would enjoy- please feel free to share pictures of anything you have loved doing on the school Facebook page for us to see.
- Can you create a 3D model of your dragon using things from around your home?
- What other animals come from an egg? Can you research this and find out a really interesting fact?
- If you have and Lego at home there is a 30 day Lego challenge.

4. On a Tuesday and Thursday morning at 10am there are online drawing lessons with the author and illustrator Rob Biddulph on his Facebook page. All the information is on his website and he even has some draw along videos you can watch on there! They are amazing. Miss Bisley really recommends this website and has enjoyed drawing along with Rob.
http://www.robbiddulph.com/draw-with-rob
5. Can you go out into your garden and use resources that you find (pebbles, grass, leaves, petals, sticks etc) to create a spring picture- can you share it on the school Facebook page?
We hope you and your families have a Happy Easter and stay safe. We are so very proud of you all, you have worked so very hard this term and we know you will continue to make us proud over the next couple of weeks. We really look forward to seeing all of your amazing dragons, enrichment activities and all the fun you are having at home on the school Facebook page. English:
Thank you so much for your predictions and questions about the eggs I found. Can I firstly say… wow your handwriting is AMAZING!!!! What fabulous bumps and flicks, you must have been practising. Freddie I loved your pictures of all the things that you can do with an egg. Also a great question, but I am afraid I do not have chickens. Thank you Alice, because of your clever thinking I have managed to save the eggs from a fox. I didn’t think about that last night! Todd I thought your ideas were super, as I do not have a chicken I used my old incubator and do you know what has happened… the eggs have begun to hatch!
Here is a video for you to watch and an activity to do afterwards.
Learning objective: I can use the past tense.
Challenge: I can use a conjunction- and, because, so, but, if
Whilst you watch the video can you write down some words to describe what you can see and what you can hear? What words best describe the noise that the chick made? What emotions did you feel watching the video?
Can you now write about what you have just watched to share with someone? You could read it to them over the phone. Remember they haven’t seen it so will need lots of detail.
Remember to:
- Write in the past tense.
- Use conjunctions (and, because, so, but, if) to help add more detail.
- Describe what you saw, heard and how you felt.
- Use your monkey ears- check it makes sense, you have spelt key words correctly – use your word mat at the front of your blue book to check your spellings.

Tuesday 24th March
Good Morning Year 2 🙂 We hope you had a great day yesterday. Thank you to all of those children who have read and answered some quiz questions from Bug Club. It is great to switch our computers on and see how many of you have opened a book and taking the quiz challenges. They are tricky!! Take your time with your reading and enjoy each book. Remember you can collect coins and use the drawing tools. If you make a muddle with a question, read the page again and have another go at the question.
Take your time with the tasks we set you and have fun with any of your own learning projects. All of the Year 2 team are thinking of you. Hopefully we can load some videos soon to say hello in person
We hope that you have a super day and manage to get some sunshine and fresh air in your garden. See you if you can do the Park Gate 10 in your garden- keep moving in any way possible for 10 minutes. Don’t forget you can start your day with Joe Wicks at 9am on You Tube.
