Welcome to Year 2’s Home Learning Task Page!
Home Learning 5/12/20
Another hard working week for all of our children. They looked very smart for their recording of the Christmas KS1 Event so a big thankyou for the last minute change!
We are jut about to complete our Animal project and the children have used their interesting facts found out at home to enhance their writing. We are now just waiting to hear from Andy of CBBC to see if we have graduated into full animal experts!
The phonics screening has now been completed and we will get back to you in the new year with results and any particular targets for phonics, if this is needed. We will continue to focus on each child’s needs whilst moving on to new letter patterns.
Reading /Spellings
Apologies to Lime Tree Class, Mrs Beazley has forgotten to hand out your record books…sorry! Please add reads on Monday.

We are reading Tom Fletcher’s Christmasaurous in class as a whole class read just for fun!!! It has captivated the adults and the children with its great description of the elves and Santa’s house. Try looking for descriptive language in books you read and books read to you. Can you make a list of words that you can put in your writing? Bring them to school and we will quarantine them for a few days.
Words for this week are

Maths …
Have a look at the math’s addition and subtraction games for ks1.. try the Y1 activities for revision or use the Y2 if you are ready. Ten minutes of playing these games earns you 1 house point. You need to achieve 2 separate math’s home learning sessions each week. This is vital practice to keep skills ticking over. The free link for Busy Things is below

Have a good week

We hope you’ve had a lovely weekend and that you are looking forward to the festive season. The children have loved creating their Christmas hoops and their sewing skills have been amazing.
Maths

This week we would like you to explore telling the time. The children need to be able to recognise o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to. If they can confidently tell all these times, they then need to begin to solve time related problems.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhk82hv/articles/zcmdwxs
Why not play this game to test your time skills.
If you can confidently read all the times why not see if you can solve the problems below,
Phonics
This week we will be exploring homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. They also have different spellings. Can you watch the clip below, play the game and complete the quiz?

What are homophones? – BBC Bitesize
Spellings
Linked with our learning on homophones, can you learn how to spell these different words?

Reading

Please remember to keep reading to earn those reading stars. Many children have already received their first star and we would love for the whole of Year 2 to achieve this by Christmas. Bug Club is fantastic for supporting reading and comprehension skills so don’t forget to access it and answer all the questions so we can see your understanding.
Thank you for your continued help and support. Have a great week.

Home Learning 13/11/20
- A little early this week as the I.T equipment in school is undergoing a change this week and so we will not be able to update this week’s blog from today onwards.
-
Phonics
- Believe it or not is Christmas hoop time again! This week we will begin our hoop creations whilst revising our phonics ready for the following week’s assessment. Children will be going home with some fun phonics activities. Please try and find the time during the week to try these out so the children are confident recognising their sounds.
- Here is a video clip using made up or alien words where words have more than one syllable. Children can breakdown the parts or syllables by listening to the word. They can clap for each part of the word.
-
Maths
- We will continue with our money work and explore solving problems and using our reasoning skills. We would like the children to practice adding and subtracting amounts. Try making up an imaginary shopping list where you can spend up to 20p or 50p or £1.
- We also use notes and apply their number facts. £20 and £30 = £50 because 2+3=5. Try adding 3 prices together using your counting on knowledge. Here are some BBC class clips to help.

Spelling
This week focus on the phonic activities that we send home and try spelling some of the words that you are working on.
Children have really loved their animal research at school and have really used their class encyclopaedias well using their word and information gathering skills.
Have a good week!

Home Learning 7/11/20 to 14/11/20
- Well done everyone for such a positive and great first week back. The children were really excited to spot strange footprints around school and be invited by Andy from the London Natural History Museum to become apprentice animal explorers for the next 5 weeks! We will be sending home this week information about their home learning project work to support their learning in school about habitats and animals. If you have any plastic animals or toys that you think we could use and are happy to donate please place in the box outside of our classrooms. We can not accept plush or cardboard due to the need to wash items through the day.
Reading
We will be taking the phonics national test in a couple of weeks and so we are focussing on all of our phonic knowledge. If you have a sheet identifying which sounds your child needs to learn please focus on these otherwise keep reading your books often, being a digraph detective!!!. Keep signing your diary for those reading stars!!! Phonic activities also count as a reading activity.
Here are some video clips for split digraphs:
As part of our exciting message from Andy we received class sets of My First animal Encyclopaedia for the children to use during their guided reading sessions. Having whole class sets means we can all work on our reading together and gain lots of facts about animals whilst developing our use of phonics, retrieval and inference skills. This week the focus will be on exploring features of non fiction books and similarities between the texts. Time ran away from us this week but there will be stickers in the reading journals this week to let you know about our guided reading. Reading takes place every day in different formats and this has contributed to the amazing progress the children are making in their reading.
Spellings
We are learning the rules for adding suffix to root words. Have a look at this clip
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/english-ks2-wonderful-words-suffixes-part-1/zdnd7nb
Maths
This week we are exploring money and different ways of making the same amount with different coins. Children can use their counting in 2 5 10 to count money. We use coins less frequently these days and so this can be a hard concept and so take this at your own child’s pace and choose an activity that interests them. We also recognise the value of notes too! Try thinking about how many ways we can make the value of 20p or £1. Meerkat maths books also have some activities.
Here is a problem to further challenge your systematic thinking. Remember short and frequent bursts of activity are best and sign your record book every time to gain more house points!!
Time Table Rockstars
We will be adjusting the TTR so that the children only see the tables they need to learn… !!!
Remembrance Poppy Trail
We hope you have all had a rest this half term holiday. Watch out for this term’s project information later in the week.
Thank you for all of your pictures and photos of your mini worlds that have either been brought to school or sent by email. We have collected them together and will be shared next Thursday or after the holidays if you have not completed the task yet. Your imagination is fantastic.
Reading
Over the last few weeks, we have worked hard to revisit all of the phonics that the children needed more support with for reading and for spelling. This has been twice daily plus other reading tasks and listening to children read to assess their understanding and word recognition. Reading in all subject areas in the week is a priority and the reading the children do at home really supports what they do in school. After the holidays, we will begin guided reading in groups and we will put a sticker in their reading journals so that you know what the reading focus is in order for you to revisit this at home. The timetable for changing books will stay the same.
As we will be carrying out the National Phonic Screening test this term instead of the Summer term in Year 1, we really need the children to focus on their phonics and sounds when reading. A practice test will take place this week to check progress and which sounds they need to work on. If your child needs more support they will have a sheet in their reading record book saying which sounds to concentrate on by the end of the week. The children have carried out these tests many times and quite enjoy the one to one time to show their skills!
Keep recording your reading for your reading stars! Here are some examples of Alien words that the children have to read to show their blending skills. This counts as a reading for your stars.
Maths
This week we are working on subtraction and using money to problem solve. Can you check that your child recognises all coins. They can also count in 10 s using 10p coins. Can you think of different ways of paying for an object that costs either 10p or 50p?
Remember to have a look at the ‘Busy Things log in’ inside your child’s reading record book as there are lots of great maths games to explore that reinforce skills and offer challenge. This counts as a maths home learning activity for your house points.
Spellings
This week we will explore the alternative sound for I
behind mind child kind
If you know these, can you make any alien words with that sound?
Have a good week….. not long before the holidays!

Home Learning 9/10/20 to 16/10/20
We have had a lovely week exploring our painting skills and getting out in our wellies this week. Hopefully we will be able to do the same next week alongside developing our sewing skills!! information about the mini world project has been sent home this week, please contact us if you need more information. We hope you are enjoying this and we are looking forward to seeing all of your drawings or photographs. The children have used Timetable Rockstars in class and it seems to be going well.
Reading
If your child has been given a sheet with sounds to work on , please count this as a read for their reading stars as this is important practice to develop their confidence in blending their sounds together. Keep sharing the phonic based books with your child if they have one. Don’t forget to enjoy your library book too!
Spelling
Please revisit spellings given so far this term.
We have been looking at past tense verbs in our reading. Here is a game to play from phonics play. You can still access it through the free log in march 20 / home try the chrome browser if you have any issues. We are exploring the different rules for adding ‘ed’ in school.
https://legacy.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/pastTensePenguin.html
Maths
This week we are exploring subtraction in school. To help the children with their fluency it is important for them to count backwards quickly and accurately. They especially find it difficult to count back from any given number over a multiple of 10. This could be… 67 66 65 64 63 62 61 60 to 59 58 57 and so on. Try orally counting back from any number whilst walking outside or completing tasks around the house. It is also useful to know the subtraction facts of 10 such as 10-1=9 10-3=7 10-4=6 and how this relates to the addition facts of 10.
If you would like a further challenge, why not explore the 100 square below. Can you answer some simple questions involving counting back?
I am thinking of a number, if you count back 7 from 50 you will arrive at my number. What is my number?
I am thinking of a number, if you count back 1 ten and 7 ones from 70 you will arrive at my number. What is my number?
Can you make up some more questions to answer?

We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday
Week Beginning Monday 5th October
Well done everyone…fantastic home learning! We can really see the effort that your are putting in and the impact on your reading , spelling and mental maths. Remember short and frequent bursts of learning are the most beneficial.
Reading
Keep reading your books for your reading stars and looking for adjectives in the text.
Here is your phonics revision. Watching and saying the sounds and words can count as one of your reads towards your reading stars.
Spellings
These are from the national list of spellings for Y1 and Y2 and we will use them in our writing this week

Maths
At last …we are ready to go!
Children have been given a log in and password to access the Time Table Rockstar on line learning. This can be found inside their Meerkat Maths Record book. They have had a go in class and will be using this at least once a week in school. It can be used at home for one of their maths home learning sessions but we also need children to be accessing any other maths home learning that is set. If children have achieved 2 sessions of maths at home per week (only 15 minute sessions) they will receive a house point. If more than this is achieved, which can include Rockstars, they will have bonus house points. These house points are given out on Fridays after the Meerkat books have been checked.
A letter about how to access and use the Rockstar online learning is linked below . It may need to run on Chrome browser if you are having difficulties. Tables have been set on the Teacher arena. If you have any questions write them in your child’s Maths record book and we will get back to you. We will check their books for queries on Tuesday.
Number Bonds
We will continue to learn these in school and are thinking about the number sentences that match each number bond. choose numbers below 10 and then move to numbers over 10, if you know these inside out and back to front!!!
For example
12 is 10+2=12 2+10=12 12= 10+2 12-2=10 12-10=2
Have a good weekend….splashing in the puddles!

Beginning Monday 28th September

Can you put them in different places around your house or garden so you can see the words as often as possible? We will be using these words in our writing this week. If you can spell these words, try writing using your 3 finger hold and your tall brave monkey letters………..l t
Reading
Keep reading to gain your reading stars. Can you tell an adult or older sibling what you have enjoyed in the book or if you have read anything similar in the past.
Children will be given a phonics reading book alongside their normal reading book. This will be to reinforce their blending of sounds and will be used as revision of previously taught letters, sounds and blending. Sometimes it is more difficult to read words out of context and so it can be useful to take the word out of the sentence to see if your child can still read the word using their sound buttons . These have been a little tricky this week:
spoil = s p oi l spraw = s p r aw drell = d r e ll cute = c ue t few = f ew
Maths
Have a look at page 31 in your Meerkat books. Try activities from this page relating to counting in groups of 2, 5 or 10. The ‘counting on’ activity can be helped with using a 100 square, which is on Page 22.
Well done … you have all worked so hard this week!
Week Beginning Monday 14th September
We will endeavour to upload this page on a Friday afternoon in the future.
Hello everyone… What a busy week that was! The children have settled really well into the new term and have worked very hard already. Thank you for your support. Check last week’s notes for any more guidance for home learning.
Reading
Please continue reading Bug Club books and the library book that was given out on Friday. This will contribute towards the Reading Stars. Our library day is normally Wednesday and so we are hoping to change books on Wednesday or Friday if Wednesday is not possible. The books have to be put to one side for 72 hours once they are returned. Please bear with us whilst we get any organisational details sorted. We have assessed the children’s phonic knowledge and we are now assessing reading level books and so they will have a reading book to take home sometime this week once your child has been assessed. Once they return their book, it will be put to one side for 72 hours before It is put back into circulation.
We would like the children to really spend quality time with their book, thinking about new vocabulary, sequencing the story and answering questions about the information or characters in the book. Some weeks we will put a reading challenge on the blog to help with this. Reading Record books to be returned to school on a Thursday please so we can count the reads for their reading stars
Maths
This week we are thinking about our understanding of the value of each digit in a 2 digit number. How many tens are there in 56? How many ones? There are 5 tens and 6 ones. Choose a number and see if you can say how many tens and how many ones.

Meerkat record books to be returned Friday mornings please. We would like the children to complete 2 lots of 10 to 15 minutes home learning sessions. Please sign the record books and the children will receive a house point ….. and feel more confident with their maths in school. A further reward system is being considered and we will let you know once we have come to a decision later in the term.
Spellings
These are taken form the Y1/2 word list that the children need to be able spell to reach age related expectations at the end of Year2. The whole list can be found on the Y2 spelling blog page. We work on these in class, which reinforces their home learning. Try copying them in different styles of writing to help memorise them. No evidence is needed. We will check spelling progress in school.

September 2020
There have been a few clarifications added!

Welcome back to Park Gate! We are so excited to start this new term with all of you! This week we will spend lots of time getting to know what you have been up to , what you are looking forward to and any worries or concerns you may have. Please contact the school office if you have any questions or things you think we should know. At he end of last term, we sent out a power point with information about the class, timetable and home learning. If you have missed this, just let us know.
This week it is all about settling into new and old routines and so home learning will be asking you to spend time talking to your child about their day. Try to encourage them to tell you 2 good things about their day or if they have any questions they want to ask us. If they do have a question let us know by writing it down or encouraging them to ask us the next day.
Spellings for the week… do not worry this week. this is optional!
This does not need to be handed in to your class teacher, just have a go!

These are a mixture of Y1/2 words. Try writing them in different colours and then asking a family member to see if you can spell them at the end of the week. You could put the words into a sentence. We will be working on these words this week.
Meerkat Maths
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1-maths-counting-with-john-farnworth/zbct8xs

This week we are counting forwards and backwards to 100. Try starting on any number and count forwards and backwards for the next 10 numbers. Revisit counting in 10s. If you need a challenge try writing the numbers in words such as 34 is thirty-four . No evidence is needed. Meerkat books to be signed when a task is completed and handed in on Fridays, starting next week.
Reading
Over the next 2 weeks, we will be assessing the children’s reading levels and ensuring that we give the correct challenge level for each child. In this time, we ask if you can continue reading the books on the Bug Club. Reading Stars will not begin this week. Reading stars will begin next week 14 th September.. We will count the weekend reading if you record it. Your reading record book will be sent home on Friday so you can record your reads from the Bug Club. Any old books will be collected in school this week. Reading record books are to be brought to school on Thursdays.
Library
Children will come home with a book for the week. This will be collected next Wednesday and a new one chosen from a selection or children can keep their book.
